School Social Worker

Hello, my name is Rachel Sams and I am the School Social Worker for Clinton-Massie Local Schools. I am proud to be a Falcon and look forward to working with your students and families!

Who are School Social Workers?

School social workers are trained mental health professionals with a degree in social work and a license through both The Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage & Family Therapy Board and The Department of Education. School Social Workers provide services related to students' and/or families social-emotional and life adjustment to school and/or society. School social workers are the link between the home, school, and community in providing direct as well as indirect services to students, families, and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success. As a school social worker, I do many things to help students and their families overcome barriers, develop intervention strategies to increase academic success, and provide crisis intervention.

What do School Social Workers do?

* Assess student needs and issues
* Assist the student in developing appropriate social skills
* Provide individual and group counseling
* Assess social/emotional needs
* Coordinate services for families and students
* Deal with attendance issues
* Network with community agencies
* Provide outreach to parents
* Help students who have problems with abuse and neglect
* Assist students who are experiencing or have experienced family violence
* Conduct home visits and interview families to assess problems affecting the child's educational process.

Why do today's schools need a School Social Worker?

Children today are increasingly victims of many forces in the community, at home, and at school that negatively affect their role as students. The family system is in a state of change and until it becomes stabilized, children's unmet physical and emotional needs will continue to interfere with their ability to learn and ultimately graduate from high school. School social workers are uniquely qualified to work with students who are economically disadvantaged, have poor attendance, and have special needs.
